The Mumbai by Dawn Tour

Recommended by Nigella Lawson & Nat Geo Traveller!

Overview

Experience a side of Mumbai that few visitors get the chance to see with this early-morning tour of the city. You’ll wake up early in time to see a fish auction, a flower market, and a vegetable market set up all along both sides of a bridge, all before most people even crawl out of bed!

Have you ever thought about where your food comes from or how that newspaper reaches your hotel room?
This 4-hour tour gives you an insight into how trade works in Mumbai and the city’s life that begins at dawn. The emphasis on fresh food in Mumbai makes mornings so important in terms of trade.
Drive to different marketplaces to see the business traders go about their daily routines. Your first interaction will be with a newspaper vendor and then you walk across the street to the fruit, flowers, and vegetable wholesalers who are surrounded by men and women bargaining for fresh supplies for the day ahead.
If you are still sleepy – the next stop is bound to wake you up, the smell of fish! The Sassoon docks are an incredible experience. It is the city’s first wet dock and the only one open to the public. You will also take a small distance train ride and at the end of the tour, you will attend Morning Prayer in one of the famous before being dropped back off at your accommodation.

Tour Highlights:

1. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus: Possibly the most architecturally stunning building in India, Victoria Terminus Railway Station, now CST, sees a record of six hundred and sixty thousand footfalls daily, making it the busiest station in Mumbai. At dawn, the CST station also serves as the city’s largest newspaper sorting area.

2. Sassoon Dock: Travelers understand the life of the Koli fisherfolk (the original inhabitants of Mumbai) and also witness the arrival and grading of 50 tonnes of fish. They also witness a one-of-its-kind fish auction of the famous Bombay Duck.

3. Dadar Market: Witness the early morning color and fragrance of this market.

4. Dhobi Ghat: Every day, thousands of dhobis (washermen) scrub, flog, wash, and bleach clothes on rows of open concrete wash pens. More than 7000 dhobis wash more than 1 lakh clothes every single day. This includes everything from hotel and hospital linens to clothes from neighborhood laundries.

Dabbawala Tour

Dabbawala, Dhobi Ghat & Slum Tour with Local Train Ride ( Best Tour in Mumbai to do )

Meet The Dabbawalas of Mumbai!

For anyone who has ever been to Mumbai, the Dabbawalas are a special class of people who everyone knows! For the uninitiated though – Who is a Dabbawalla?
The word “dabbawala” in Hindi when literally translated, means “one who carries a box”. “Dabba” means a box (usually a cylindrical tin or aluminum container). The closest meaning of the dabbawala in English would be the “lunch box delivery man”
Each day throughout the city of Mumbai, 5,000 of the dabbawalas deliver some 130,000 dabbas to offices throughout the metropolis. In the nearly 120 years of this service, the dabbawalas’ approach has remained consistent: a semi-literate workforce (the dabbawalas) pick up the filled dabbas from the households that prepare them and deliver the boxes to the requisite offices; they then retrieve the empty dabbas from these delivery points and returned them to the originating households, in order to begin the process again the next day. Roughly 260,000 transactions are completed within 6 hours each day, 6 days a week, 51 weeks a year, and operating at a quality level comparable to Six Sigma processes. Moreover, this operational excellence is accomplished in the absence of technology, such as computers or even cell phones.
Stories – like the remarkable one that the Dabbawalas have, inspire teams to relook at their own paradigms with fresh new eyes.

See the real Hero of Mumbai.

>Dhobi Ghat ( Open Air-Laundry )

(Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat) is a well-known open-air laundromat in Mumbai, India. The washers, locally known as Dhobis, work in the open to wash the clothes from Mumbai’s hotels and hospitals. There are rows of open-air concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone. Called the world’s largest outdoor laundry, Dhobi Ghat is a very popular attraction among foreign tourists.
The word Dhobi Ghat is used all over India to refer to any place where many washers are present. It is located next to Mahalaxmi railway station on the Western Railway’s Saat Rasta roundabout. It can be easily seen from the flyover bridge of Mahalaxmi station.
In 2013, World Records India and World Amazing Records honored World Record Certificate to Dhobi Kalyan.

The Longer Yard

ABOUT THE THE LONGER YARD:

This tour is a half day experience, Dharavi has an active informal economy in which numerous household enterprises employ many of the slum residents, leather, textiles and pottery products are among the goods made inside Dharavi. Most of these things are created innovatively, in very small spaces!
Before the visit to Dharavi slum, we pass through Red Light Area (Kamathipura) & Dhobi Gath (Open Air Laundry)
>Kamathipura (also spelled Kamthipura) is Mumbai’s oldest and Asia’s second largest Red-Light District. It was first settled after 1795 with the construction of causeways that connected the erstwhile seven islands of Bombay. Initially known as Lal Bazaar, it got its name from the Kamathis (workers) of other areas of the country, who were laborers on construction sites. Due to tough police crackdown, in the late 1990s with the rise of AIDS and government’s redevelopment policy that helped sex workers to move out of the profession and subsequently out of Kamathipura, the number of sex workers in the area has dwindled. In 1992, Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded there were 50,000 sex workers here which were reduced to 1,600 in 2009, with many sex workers migrating to other areas in Maharashtra and real estate developers taking over the high-priced real estate.
>Dhobi Ghat (Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat) is a well-known open-air laundromat in Mumbai, India. The washers, locally known as Dhobis, work in the open to wash the clothes from Mumbai’s hotels and hospitals.
